Together with the team of Carsten Rockstuhl (Karlsruhe) and Thomas Weiss (Graz), we just published a key result of David’s PhD thesis in Light: Science & Applications. What we show, in a nutshell, is that any dielectric object of finite size goes through a symmetry-breaking transition if its refractive index is driven sufficiently strongly and fast – allowing one to build a new type of laser or a coherent-perfect-absorber.
